Title I- Reading Program

St. John Regional Catholic School participates in the Title I federally funded program to assist students in reading. Title I teachers have the same qualifications and certifications as classroom teachers. Title I students have the opportunity to work with a teacher in a small group or on a one-to-one basis. These services can be provided in the classroom or in the Title I room. The Title I teacher is able to reinforce classroom learning and give additional help. The closer attention provided by the Title I teacher in coordination with the classroom teacher helps the student get the extra support they need. One of the goals of the Title I program is to teach students reading strategies that they are able to use when reading outside of the program. Below are some examples that help improve both word attack and comprehension.

Word Attack Reading Strategies

  1. Ask yourself- Does the word I am using make sense?
  2. Unlock the key- What is the story about?
  3. Is this a word I've heard before? Is there a word I know that looks like this word? Example: If I know "book", I also know look, took, and cook.
  4. Frame it- Look for little words you know within the bigger word. Example: in the word "lightweight", you may know light and eight.
  5. Use the pictures for clues.
  6. Shape your mouth with the beginning sound, so it will pop out. Use your fingers to tap out the sounds.
  7. Skip it and go on to see if you can figure out the word within the sentence.
  8. Back track to the beginning of the sentence and try again.

Reading Comprehension Strategies

  1. Make predictions about the story based on what has happened already in the story. In a non-fiction book predict what you will learn.
  2. Ask questions when you read or after you have finished reading. Examples: Do you like this book? Why or Why not? Where does the story or action take place? Can you think of a better title for this story? What is the most interesting part of the story? Scariest? Funniest? Do you think the character(s) in the story did the right thing? Why? Does this story remind you of anything?
  3. Summarize the story in your own words. What happens first? Next? Before the ??
