Third Grade at St. John Regional Catholic School

Third grade is a wonderful year of exploring, investigating, creating, and growing as individuals.

There are many opportunities for students to challenge themselves academically and personally. It is an exciting year of learning about our world and our environment.

Social Studies
There are many fun activities that take place during the school year. For example, within our Social Studies curriculum, students learn about map skills and create their own map for the teacher to follow to receive a special treat. Some of the themes we look at are Families & Communities, the History and Government of the U.S., and other countries.

Religion
In our Religion classes, students develop a deeper appreciation of their faith. They come to understand and apply Jesus' teachings to their own lives and recognize their unique gifts and their role in the Christian community. We do scripture readings, writing prayers, designing posters, word games, share our gifts and talents with the surrounding communities, and many other faith-filled activities.

Reading Program
Our Reading program consists of using basal readers as well as chapter books. We do monthly reading projects through the Pizza Hut "Book It Club" where students can earn a free personal pan pizza. We study fairy tales or Maine topics for Halloween.

Math
Students review their addition and subtraction facts in Math as well as learning their multiplication facts 1-10. Then we venture forth through geometry, fractions, multiplication and division.

Science
Third graders study animals, the weather, how things work, and water systems in Science. We do many hands-on activities as we look at these topics. In the spring, we take a field trip for a true hands-on experience about one of our units.

Throughout the year, students work on writing skills using the 6 Traits, paragraphing and other grammar exercises.

The students keep monthly homework charts to earn rewards for having good study skills. There are weekly letters or "updates" that go home to keep parents aware of their child's work, behavior, and what's going on in and around the classroom. A lot of fun and learning take place here in third grade!

What's going on in third grade in 2008..?

Students in the Third Grade were busy making hats for Hat Day in celebration of Catholic Schools Week 2009.

Messages from Kenya...
For the past two years third graders in Mrs. Shari Kinney's class have studied Africa for the school's "Countries Night." They immerse themselves in the culture of their country they are studying and learn anything and everything about it. Last April, an amazing woman affectionately named, Mama Dolfine visited with the third and fourth graders. She came to the classroom and talked of her life and plight with the Korando Faith Children Centre and her work with the Korando orphans. Her speech was moving for the students and teachers alike that the students decided to raise money to buy a mosquito net for the orphans there. Through their kindness they raised over $60 and were able to buy 3 nets for the orphanage. Through a non profit organization named Ripple Effect, located in Augusta, the nets found their way to Mama Dolfine over the summer.

Much to the delight and surprise of our kind students on September 9th a package arrived from Kenya. Inside was a thank you letter from Mama Dolfine, individual letters to each of the students who participated and the most exquisite handcrafted jewelry made out of cow bone, paper strips, wood and dried seeds. The students were thrilled and so appreciative of the Kenyan students' kind thank you.

These are the types of lessons taught here at St. John School of reaching out and caring for others halfway across the world. What a valuable lesson and how fortunate our students are to be a part of such an amazing project!!
