Second grade is an exciting year especially in that we prepare to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation.
Start of day
We have been starting our day with prayer and the pledge of allegiance. Then, we go to morning circle where we greet each other, listen to a read aloud and sometimes we sing and do other activities. We hope to have some share time as the year progresses.
Handwriting
In handwriting, we start the year with manuscript writing and begin to practice cursive writing later in the year.
Math
Some new concepts that we work on in Math are the addition and subtraction of two- and three-digit numbers with regrouping. We begin to learn our multiplication facts, do some work with geometry, especially perimeter, and we continue to work on problem solving and understanding the key words in the problems so that we can solve them.
Phonics
We continue with Phonics in Grade 2. During phonics, second graders have been able to earn buttons or play coins to use during our much anticipated classroom auctions.
Reading - comprehension and fluency
This year we have been reading to other students in the school to improve our fluency, expression and comprehension. We have been doing readers' theater and "buddy" reading in our classroom.
What's Happening in Second Grade?
Mrs. Nassar's second grade class graphed 100 m & m's with bar graphs with their 100 day celebration.

The students in second grade celebrated the 100th day of school by making vests with 100 items on them and visiting each of the classrooms delivering treats.
We recently went on a field trip to a pumpkin patch and incorporated science, religion and music into this fun trip.
Mrs. Nassar's second grade class has been very very busy this fall. They have spent time reading to both preschool and kindergarten students. All students in this class have taken the time to practice different books and have shared those books with both of these classes, taking turns reading to different students.
They also worked very hard on diaramas that represented books that they had read and studied.
And for the Maine Parade they all looked great dressed as Pumpkins with their Farmer Nassar. Great job Second Graders!!!
