By the time students reach fifth grade, high-level reading skills are evident and students read a variety of genres with emphasis on fluency and analyzing text. The reading program requires 30 minutes a night of reading at home. Student and teacher correspond about the reading in a journal that is kept at school. Guided reading and literature circles are a regular part of the classroom.
Writing is another big focus in fifth grade. Narrative, expository, persuasive pieces and more are practiced to guide the student to become the best communicators they can be.
Science covers many areas in the fifth grade from aspects of geology, animal life, physical matter, and sound to the ocean. Hands-on approaches are used whenever possible.
Social Studies is often blended with the reading program. We may read books on Native Americans, Explorers and The American Revolution while studying that same topic in Social Studies. Our goal is to have quality nonfiction titles available in all the grades to perform double duty in the curriculum.
