Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to live in a particular community to attend St. John? Back To Top
No, St. John Regional Catholic School is a diocesan school that serves our entire region. We have students coming in from Windsor, Albion, Vassalboro, and China, as well as Waterville, Winslow and Fairfield. Students living in Winslow are eligible to take the public school busses to St. John.
What if my family is not Catholic? Back To Top
We welcome families of all religious faiths and backgrounds to St John Regional Catholic School. Religion and the teachings of the Catholic Church are taught at every grade level. The teachers and staff do not try to convert students or families to Catholicism. We make every effort to make sure our non Catholic families understand our mission and are comfortable in our school. All students are expected to attend all scheduled masses and other religious activities.
What does St John offer that is not in the public school system? Back To Top
We believe that the formation of the whole child involves intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual growth. As a private school, we are able to offer a moral code and value based education experience. Your child will receive an excellent education, learn self discipline, and develop spiritually in their time at St. John. We believe that the formation of a strong character is as important as learning a subject, and are able to reinforce this belief throughout the school day.
What are the hours of the school day? Back To Top
The school doors open at 7:15 am and classes begin at 7:45am. Students are dismissed at 2:00pm. For those families who require it, there is a child care available before school beginning at 6:30am and an after school care program that goes to 5:30pm. The cost of this child care is separate from tuition, and is billed according to the time utilized.
Is tuition assistance available? Back To Top
We believe very strongly that a family who desires a Catholic education for their children should not be denied. The Catholic parishes in our cluster generously support our school, and allow us to offer a lower tuition for Catholic families. The hard work of friends and alumni of our school also provides some additional funds to assist families who choose St. John. Any family in need may fill out an application for tuition assistance at the time of registration. The Pastor reviews them, and offers scholarships based on need and the funds available.
Do you have a dress code policy? Back To Top
We believe that appropriate dress is important in creating a positive atmosphere for learning. Our full dress code policy is found under rules and policies. St. John has never had uniforms, though the School Board will continue to explore the merits of this option. Children are expected to dress up for their monthly School Mass and other designated functions. The Principal is the ultimate interpreter of whether a child is complying with the dress code.
Are your teachers certified? Back To Top
Yes, all our teachers are certified by the State of Maine. Many have advanced degrees or certificates.
